Civil Wedding (Marriage) Montréal Courthouse – Palais de justice Montréal – Civil marriage and civil union celebration take place in a solemn place in which the celebrant unite by the bonds of marriage or by the bonds of civil union those who wish to unite according to the law.  Courthouse civil marriage or the celebration of your civil marriage by a notary have the same value.

The Montreal Courthouse (Palais de justice de Montréal)  gives you the opportunity to have a civil marriage (civil wedding) celebrated. But there is a big difference between civil marriages performed by a notary, a celebration at the Court House, or a civil wedding performed by a civil servant or relative – the differences are considerable.

It is a more personalized and solemn celebration offered by Me Leopold Lincà, a notary who performs weddings in Montreal.

Call Me Lincà to get an appointment at (438)383-3116)  to learn more about preparing for your civil wedding celebration.

The price of a civil marriage at the Montreal Courthouse compared to the price of a civil marriage before a notary, Mtre Leopold Lincà.

The price/rate for a civil wedding at the Montreal courthouse costs approximately $280 plus taxes but does not include legal advice regarding the choice of a matrimonial regime or other legal information for your particular situation.

What are the prices of a marriage officiant authorized by the Director of Civil Status of Quebec?

You will have to pay between $300 and $900 to solemnize your civil marriage by an authorized wedding officiant. If the celebrant is not a notary or legal advisor, they cannot give you legal advice on the legal implications of civil marriage.

A civil wedding in front of Me Lincà, notary and wedding officiant is offered to you from $300. These fees include the wedding celebration in one of our ceremonial rooms. Also, personalized legal advice, drafting and sending of forms. Whether you want to celebrate at home, in a reception room, in a restaurant, inn, hotel, downtown Montreal, or elsewhere in Quebec. Me Lincà, civil marriage celebrant, will be happy to accompany you in this very special event of your life.

Civil marriage at the Courthouse – Marrying or Civilly Uniting at the Courthouse in Montreal is a valid option but may have some disadvantages regarding the dates available and the place of celebration. The clerk will read sections 392 to 396 of the Civil Code of Quebec and then receive the consent of the future spouses. The civil marriage ceremony will take place in the courtroom. It is very important to think carefully about alternatives and benefits in order to make an informed choice.

The celebration of a civil marriage or civil union takes place in a solemn place in which the celebrant unites by the bonds of marriage or by the bonds of civil union, persons who wish to unite according to the law. The rights and obligations of a marriage and a civil union are identical. The same applies to the conditions of celebration.

At what age are we able to marry civilly or join a civil union?

So what is the difference between the civil marriage and the civil union?  Essentially, it is the age of the spouses.  In a civil union, the future spouses must be 18 years of age and older.  For marriage it’s 16 years and more with the consent of the Courthouse.

Also, the dissolution of a civil union is through marriage between spouses, through the death of a spouse, through a judgment in dissolution (Courthouse), or through a declaration of the dissolution of a civil union before a notary. A marriage ends with the death of a spouse or a courthouse divorce judgment.

What are the time limits for a civil marriage and can you get married every day of the week at the Montreal courthouse?

Wait times are longer at the Montreal Courthouse. It takes an average of 60 days after the filing of your civil marriage application. With Me Lincà, you will be able to celebrate your marriage within the minimum deadlines prescribed by law, that is to say in 21 days.

A marriage or civil union may be celebrated at the Courthouse before a clerk or deputy clerk of the Superior Court. In addition, the celebration takes place mainly from Monday to Saturday, but there is no ceremony on Sundays, nor for holidays.

The time of celebration at the Courthouse is between 9:00 and 16:30. Getting married in the Courthouse – it must be said that the conditions of celebration are much more restrictive compared to a celebration performed by another marriage officiant authorized by law.

Indeed, the union can be celebrated at the Palais de justice de Montréal, Québec (Montreal Courthouse) or outside, by the clerk, but only on a certain day, and at a certain time. What is an additional constraint is the waiting times to be able to celebrate your union, which can easily exceed 20 days, the legal deadline provided by the Civil Code of Quebec.

So what other solution can be considered in the case of a civil marriage or a civil union?

Of course, it is to have a notary as a wedding officiant!

The advantage of having your civil marriage celebrated by Me Lincà, notary and wedding officiant

  • adapted legal advice,
  • shorter waiting times,
  • place of your choice,
  • same-sex and foreign marriages
  • choice of any day of the week,
  • more extensive choice of the time of celebration (until 22:00)
  • part of the celebration: one of our magnificent ceremonial rooms or another place of your choice

The first reflex we have when we think of the celebration of a marriage or a civil union is to celebrate the union at the Courthouse. The problem is that this solution does not always give benefits to the married couple: lack of flexibility of schedules, increased waiting times, fixed place and unattractive. So the alternative is to choose a notary as the celebrant. The bride and groom decide what is best for them. They can opt for the Courthouse, a notary, or any other authorized celebrant / wedding officiant of their choice!
